Meet our staff!

MITCH HENKIN

Mitch, founder and president of GMH Enterprises, Inc., has been a teaching professional in the Washington area for over 30 years.  He manages the tennis programs at the Bethesda Sport & Health Club and the Promenade Tennis Club, in Bethesda.  In addition, he runs summer junior camps at Sport & Health, St. Andrew's School in Potomac, Georgetown Visitation in Georgetown, and The Audrey Moore Recreation Center in Annandale.  He has been certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) since 1972.  Mitch graduated from Northwestern University and received a Master's Degree in science journalism from Boston University. In addition to developing the summer sports camp programs at Visitation, St. Andrew's, Connelly School, and the Catholic University of America, he created the summer tennis camps at Stone Ridge School, Landon School, and Episcopal High School.

CAY MILLER

Cay, vice president of operations at GMH Enterprises, Inc., and director of the field hockey camp at St. Andrew's, earned All Met honors in field hockey in 1999 while playing at Churchill High School.  She continued her field hockey career at Haverford College in Haverford, PA, (including a semester abroad in 2002 in Melbourne, Australia) twice earning MVP and All-Conference honors.  She graduated with a B.A. in Linguistics in 2003.  In 2005, Cay became the first field hockey player to be inducted into the Churchill Sports Hall of Fame.  In 2006, she directed SportStar and HoopStar at the Regency Sport & Health Club, in McLean.  From 2005-2007, Cay coached the Churchill junior varsity field hockey team for three seasons.  In 2009, she received her master's in education from George Washington University.

MARILEE STAFFORD

Marilee, director of tennis at the Bethesda Sport & Health Club, was the #1 ranked women's tennis player in Maryland in 1996.  She also competed nationally and graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education from ORU in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  She organizes all the tennis programs at Bethesda Sport & Health and works with adults and juniors at every level.  Marilee offers a tremendous personality on the court, creating a learning experience that is positive and fun.

STEVE PARKER

Steve, director of the TenniStar camp and the advanced players clinics at the Bethesda Sport and Health Club, was a high performance head coach and an area training and zonal coach for the United States Tennis Association (USTA).  He was an instructor at the Bullis Tennis Center for seven years, running its junior elite program.  He has worked with several nationally ranked junior and has a Pro 1 certification from the USPTR.  Steve runs practices for adult teams, working on technique, strategy and fitness. 


TIANA SMITH

Tiana, assistant director of TenniStar and Mitch Henkin’s principal assistant at the Promenade, earned all-state honors in tennis, volleyball and soccer while playing at Kauai High School, in Hawaii.  In June 2002, she was inducted into the Nissan Hawaii Sports Hall of Honor.  She continued her tennis career at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, HI, where she captained the UH-Hilo squad for her final two years and with her doubles partner, developed a national ranking.  Tiana was awarded a degree in economics in 2006.  She is currently in her second year as assistant coach of the Trinity University women's tennis team.  Tiana has conducted clinics and private lessons for youth and adults at Yale University and the Milford Indoor Tennis Club in Connecticut.  Tiana works with Mitch's advanced player groups and specializes in devising specific programs to develop quickness, agility, flexibility and endurance.

HAROOT HAKOPIAN

Haroot, the varsity girls’ coach at Churchill High School, will direct the 2010 SoccerStar Camp at St. Andrew’s.  In addition to his coaching duties, he serves as the director of girls' soccer for Montgomery County Public Schools and is both the president of the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer(MACS) and the south region chair for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's (NSCAA) high-school All America Committee.  He holds his "C" license from the USSF as well as his National and Advanced National diploma's from the NSCAA.  As a player with the US Army team in Germany, he led a defense that won the European military championship for three consecutive seasons

Haroot has been teaching in MCPS for over 17 years.  He received his BA in English Education from the University of Maryland at College Park and his MS in Curriculum & Instruction from Scranton University. 

SARAH SCHERMERHORN

Sarah will direct the LaxStar Camp during the summer of 2010.  Sarah is currently the head women’s lacrosse coach at Trinity University in Washington.  She had a stand-out four-year varsity lacrosse career at the Gunnery School in Washington, CT where she was selected as an All-American.  She received a scholarship to play as a starter on Vanderbilt’s first NCAA Division I female lacrosse team.  She is adept at teaching the sport’s fundamentals and intricacies to players of all levels and her focus is on positive reinforcement.  Sarah is a native of McLean who attended The Potomac School, before Gunnery.  She is a certified firefighter paramedic as well. 

CORY HANKS

Cory, assistant varsity girls’ coach at St. Stephen and St. Agnes High School in Alexandria, Virginia, will direct the 2010 SoccerStar Camp at Georgetown Visitation.  Cory is the head coach for the U-9 Chantilly Soccer Club Travel Team and the lead trainer at Reston Soccer Youth Advanced Training for U5-U8 teams. Cory has also coached the women’s club team at James Madison University, leading them to become the National Open League champions in 1998 and second place at the National Championship in 1999. 

CAITLIN CRAWBUCK

Caitlin, tennis assistant at the Promenade and director of TenniStar at St. Andrew's School, played #3 singles at Rider University, where she was the first Rider tennis player to earn first-team All-MAAC honors in the school’s history. In high school, she was ranked #1 in the New Jersey district girls 18’s and held a high sectional ranking. In 2008, she earned a B.A. in English from Rider. She has been teaching professionally for eight years, and with her enthusiasm, dedication, and high energy, Caitlin is a perfect fit for teaching adults and young players alike. 

SCOTT MOERSCHBACHER

Scott played #1 singles and doubles for Lycoming College, where he was MAC Freedom Conference Rookie of the year in 1999, and a Freedom Conference Academic All Star, 1999-2002.  After earning a Bachelor's Degree from Lycoming College in 2002, Scott began graduate studies at the George Washington University, where he finished his Master's Degree in 2007.  Scott completed his doctorate in theoretical nuclear physics and currently teaches at Alfred University in New York.  Scott will return in the summer to work at TenniStar Camp and will assist Mitch at the Promenade.

AUSTIN YICK
Austin Tsou Yick is a JV tennis coach and assistant freshman basketball coach at Georgetown Visitation.   He will co-direct the TenniStar Camp at Georgetown Visitation. Since 2003, he has worked as a tennis instructor at the Lafayette tennis club teaching adults, teams, and children. Austin played #1 singles for Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC and during the indoor season has been working as a tennis instructor at the Bethesda Sport & Health Club.
MOHAMED BENNANI

Mohamed, a leading coach with DC Stoddert since 2001, will direct the advanced and travel players SoccerStar Camp for boys at Georgetown Visitation. Mohamed is the head coach for the U18 National Capitol Soccer League Division 1 team and is the U13/U14 Age Group Director for Stoddert. He was a professional player in Morocco and was a member of the Moroccan Junior National team. He holds a 2009 United States Soccer Federation “B” license as well as a Netherlands Soccer Federation (KNVB) educational certificate. In 2004, he received the boys coach-of-the-year award from the Virginia Youth Soccer Association.
 

FRED PRIESTER

Fred, director of HoopStar Camp at Georgetown Visitation, has been a head girls’ high school basketball coach in northern Virginia for 26 years, 10 at McLean High School and 16 at Oakton High School. He has over 500 career wins, along with 12 district championships, four regional championships, and five trips to the AAA Final Four. In addition, he has been head coach of the Vogues AAU 16 and under team for 24 years and has directed high school camps for 25 years. In 2009, he was The Washington Post All-Met coach of the year and AAA Virginia state coach of the year. He has been president of the Northern Virginia Women’s Basketball Coaches Association for 25 years.

 

FRED DRILLING

Fred, head tennis pro at the Georgetown Visitation Tennis Club and currently the varsity girls’ tennis coach at Georgetown Visitation, is one of the area’s most experienced teaching professionals and accomplished players. He was the head tennis pro at both the Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase and at the Aspen Hill Racquet Club in Silver Spring for 6 years each.  Fred owned and operated the Drilling Tennis Shop for 22 years. He coached the Holton-Arms and Florida Gulf Coast University teams.
